Located at the highest point of the grounds of Château de Dormans, the memorial commemorates the victories at the two Battles of the Marne (September 1914 and July 1918) and honours all those who fought in the First World War. Visitors who climb the tower (105 steps) can enjoy a spectacular view of the Marne Valley and gain a better idea of the scale of the battlefield.
Recently granted historic monument status, the Battles of the Marne Memorial overlooks the Dormans area and southern slope of the Marne Valley. It comprises a chapel plus crypt, cloister and gallery leading to an ossuary, a ‘lantern to the dead’ (a stone tower with a light indicating the site of a cemetery), museum, walking route and children’s playground.
