The delightful mansion on Rue Jeanson, which is the headquarters of the Deutz Champagne House in Aÿ, perfectly encapsulates the “Deutz spirit”. A certain ethos of modesty, even of complete humility, is conveyed right from the entrance courtyard. While the mansion was built by the two founders, it owes its charm and character to Marie Deutz (second generation), as the Napoleon III reception rooms still demonstrate to this day. Good taste without showiness.
In 1838 William Deutz (1809-1884) and Pierre-Hubert Geldermann (1811-1872), both from Aix-la-Chapelle, founded the Deutz Champagne House in Aÿ. The mansion on Rue Jeanson, which is its headquarters, was developed by William Deutz in 1861.
The buildings are located on both sides of Boulevard du Nord: on one side of the street are the “customer-facing” premises, whose architecture, interior design and English-style garden embody an image of excellence that encapsulates the product; on the other side of the road are the industrial premises and access to the cellars on the hillside.
The buildings containing the formal rooms, offices and private apartments encircle a paved courtyard, adorned by a small flowerbed featuring a bronze sculpture known as L'Amour de Deutz, which has lent its name to Deutz's prestigious vintages.
The House's cellars comprise 20 galleries extending over two levels, with the far end of the longest gallery descending to a depth of 65m under the Aÿ hillsides. The total length of the galleries is 3km. Initially dug out during the years 1887 to 1892, they were further developed in 2011 and can store up to 10 million bottles.
